In the middle of my eighth grade year at Balboa Middle School I suddenly found myself faced with a very important decision. All eighth grade students are required to make the decision about where they want to attend high school in Ventura. My family lives in the Ventura High School District. Initially, I thought I would attend Ventura since most of my friends planned to go there and I heard many good things about the school. Another option was to complete a form to be entered into a lottery to attend Foothill Tech. I knew that Foothill had a great academic reputation and so I decided to go for it.
Within a few days after I turned in my lottery form I felt a bit unsure of my decision. My heart told me that I should go to Ventura because of the people who were going there. Most of my good friends wanted to go to Ventura. Each chance I had to spend time with my friends there was a lot of discussion and excitement about going to Ventura. There was a certain appeal to the experience of being a part of a large school environment with the opportunity to meet so many new people. I wanted to attend school rallies and share in the school spirit with my friends. My heart had a good argument because I wanted those experiences. I wondered if I would have the same fun experience if I attended Foothill with a smaller number of students.
My head really was pushing the Foothill side of my brain. I knew that the academic experience would be wonderful given Foothill’s high academic ranking and I wanted to get the most out of my high school education. I knew that going to Foothill would prepare me for attending college. I wondered if the smaller number of students attending Foothill would be a better fit. Smaller class sizes would certainly be a benefit. I reviewed the course catalog and found a number of classes that I was interested in.
Overall, I feel that I have made the right decision to be a part of the Foothill Technology High School class of 2014. I think this will give me a great experience and many new opportunities.
